6 Tips for Getting Your Home Ready for Winter

The days are getting shorter and your fall to do list is getting longer! If you’re lucky, you can schedule some time in between the rainy days here in Michigan to take care of a few things before the snow falls:
- Care for trees and shrubs: Proper pruning now will prevent falling limbs during winter storms, so trim the dead out of your trees. You may need to hire a professional for your larger trees to avoid any injuries to yourself or even to the tree.
- Rake Leaves and clean out your flower beds: Raking leaves now will make it easier for plants to grow in the spring as well as cleaning all the dead annuals out of your flower beds. This will give you a jump start in the spring when you’re eager to plant again.
- Clean gutters and downspouts: As soon as all the leaves have fallen, clean out gutters and downspouts to prevent gutters from getting clogged during rainstorms and causing damage to the gutters, siding or roof.
- Repairs to the exterior of the home: Take a walk around your home to spot any damage to the foundation, siding, roof, chimney, doors, windows, walkways, driveway, etc. and repair before winter weather hits.
- Turn off exterior faucets and store hoses: Before the weather freezes, make sure to turn off all exterior faucets to prevent damage to the pipes. You should also drain hoses and store them in your shed, garage or barn.
- Have your heating system checked: It’s always a good idea to schedule an appointment with a heating professional to come and make sure your heating system is in good shape. You don’t want to lose heat on the coldest day of the year!
After all this, you can hunker down for the winter and turn your attention to the indoor tasks you can add to you to do list!
